            Donald Frederic Sharer, 90 of Altoona, beloved husband, father and grandfather, entered into eternal rest late Wednesday evening November 2, 2016.

            He was born October 16, 1926 in Altoona a son of the late S. Fred and Florine Olive (McCormick) Sharer.

            He is survived by his loving wife, the former Marian E. Felten, whom he married February 6, 1954 in Harrisburg and two children, Niai Webb and her husband, Richard of Sparta, NJ and James “Skip” Sharer and his wife Barbara of Hayesville, NC. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Josh, Christopher and Aleks.

            Don was a 1944 graduate of Altoona High School and attended the Pennsylvania State University.

            Mr. Sharer was a member of Christ Community United Methodist Church where he served as treasurer for 14 years.

He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of WWII obtaining the rank of Sergeant.

            He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1981 after 33 years’ service.

            Don was active in his Masonic affiliations, being a member of Hiram Lodge #616 Free & Accepted Masons, Altoona; Valley of Altoona, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite bodies; Jaffa Shrine Center where he served as Potentate in 2006 and was a member of Cabiri #106; Jaffa Cycle Corps; Altoona Court #70, Royal Order of Jesters; Colotic Miztli #91, Order of Quetzalcoatl where in 2003 he was awarded an OKET (Order of Knights, Eagles and Tigers). Don was a charter member of this organization and served as its first treasurer. He was also a member of Chief Logan Forest #131, Tall Cedars of Lebanon and maintained memberships in various other Masonic and Shrine related units and clubs.

            Don enjoyed traveling, spending time with family and friends, and especially enjoyed spending time as a Shriner helping children. He also enjoyed his white standard poodles.

            Friends will be received from 3-7 p.m. Sunday November 6, 2016 at Myers-Somers Funeral Home, Inc., 501 Sixth Avenue, Altoona where a Masonic funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m. and 10-11 a.m. Monday November 7, 2016 at Christ Community United Methodist Church, 5715 Roselawn Avenue, Altoona.

            A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Christ Community United Methodist Church with Rev. Rebecca Harmon officiating. Military honors will be accorded immediately following the funeral service at the church. Private interment will be made at Alto Reste Park Cemetery.

            In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, care of Jaffa Shrine, PO Box 1984, Altoona, PA 16603-1984 or to the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society, 1837 East Pleasant Valley Boulevard, Altoona.
