Ernest E. “Ernie” Eakins, 89 of Altoona, passed away peacefully Wednesday May 11, 2016 at UPMC Altoona following a lengthy illness.

            He was born March 31, 1927 in Altoona, a son of the late Ernest Elmer and Catherine (Gunsalus) Eakins.

            Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Lois Marlene (Breon) Eakins; two daughters, Deena L. Miller of Newtown and Doreen L. Carey of Ocala, FL; and a sister Joyce Farabaugh of Altoona.

            He was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles and Robert both were of Altoona, and a son-in-law George Carey of Ocala, FL.

            Ernie was a 1945 graduate of Altoona High School. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the United States Army 45th Air Repair Squadron in Germany.

            Following his discharge from the Army Air Force, he completed a car building apprenticeship with the Pennsylvania Railroad in Altoona. He was employed with the PA Railroad for 15 years, first in Altoona and then in the Mechanical Engineering office in Philadelphia. He then enjoyed 38 years with Ellcon National, a railroad supply company based in New Jersey. As Eastern Sales Manager, he traveled throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada. Following his retirement, he continued with Ellcon National as a consultant until he completely retired at age 80.

            He was a life member of the Railroaders Memorial Museum and a member of the Greenwood Lions Club. He was a former member of the Railway Club of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Air Brake Club, Trenton New Jersey BPOE and Sinking Valley Country Club.

            At the request of the deceased, there will be no viewing. A private interment will be at Alto Reste Park Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by Auer Cremation Society and Myers-Somers Funeral Home, Inc.

            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Railroaders Memorial Museum, 1300 ninth Avenue, Altoona.
