Oliver West “Ollie” Britten, 82 of Altoona died early morning April 7, 2016 at UPMC Altoona.
He was born October 29, 1933 in Houtzdale a son of the late Howard and Melissa (Bloom) Britten. He married Ellen L. Strong on November 12, 1955 at the Clearfield EUB Church.
Surviving are his wife, Ellen; daughter Pamela Jean Nagle and her husband Timothy of Royersford; sister-in-law Doris Dale and her husband Joe; sister-in-law Joyce Bowden; brother-in-law John Haines, III; and “Louie”, Ollie’s favorite grand puppy.
Ollie was preceded in death by a brother Kenny Britten; a brother-in-law Donald Bowden and a sister-in-law Lenora Haines.
Mr. Britten was a member of Greenwood United Methodist Church, Altoona.
He was a 1951 graduate of Houtzdale-Brisbin High School.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during the Korean War as a Machinist’s Mate aboard the U.S.S. Hancock.
Ollie retired as the maintenance supervisor of the Altoona Area School District and had also been employed at Penn State Altoona. He had previously been employed as the building and grounds superintendent for the Jaffa Shrine.
He enjoyed his family and also enjoyed gardening and puzzles and had previously served as a Scout leader.
Ollie was a member of Osceola Lodge #515, Free & Accepted Masons; Valley of Altoona, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite bodies; 59 year member of Jaffa Shrine where he was a member of the Oriental Band; Jaffa Shrine Club; Chief Logan Forest #131, Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Square and Compass Club.
Friends will be received from 2-4 p.m. Sunday April 10, 2016 at Myers-Somers Funeral Home, Inc., 501 Sixth Avenue, Altoona where a masonic funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. and 10-11 a.m. Monday April 11, 2016 at Greenwood United Methodist Church, 1505 East Walton Avenue, Altoona where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday with Pastor Duane Coy and Rev. Denise Arpino co-officiating. Interment will be made at Fruit Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Greenwood United Methodist Church or to Shriners Hospitals for Children, care of Jaffa Shrine, PO Box 1984, Altoona, PA 16603-1984.
