Barbara Ann (Schall) Helsel

            Barbara Ann Helsel, 74 of Sinking Valley died Monday evening June 17, 2019 at UPMC Shadyside, Pittsburgh following an extended illness.

            She was born January 26, 1945 in Altoona a daughter of the late Russell R. and Mildred F. (Hart) Schall. She married Jerry L. Helsel on December 9, 1965 in Sinking Valley.

            Surviving are her husband, Jerry; two children, daughter Wanda L. Vanish and her husband Brian; son Brad S. Helsel all of Altoona; granddaughter Ashley K. Pletcher of Thomasville, NC; and brother Robert R. Schall of Florida.

            Barb was preceded in death by an infant son, Randy Scott Helsel on March 4, 1971.

            Mrs. Helsel was a former member of Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church, Sinking Valley.

            She was a 1962 graduate of Altoona High School.

            Barb retired as a legal secretary for Attorney Jack Eberhardt and Attorney Ben Yeager following many years’ service.

            She enjoyed reading; playing the piano; horseback riding; baking and cooking; she enjoyed traveling, especially yearly to Virginia Beach with Jerry for the Shriners convention.

                        Friends will be received from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursday June 27, 2019 at Myers-Somers Funeral Home, Inc., 501 Sixth Avenue, Altoona where a memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. with Pastor Duane J. Coy officiating. Interment will be made at Carson Valley Cemetery.

            In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations please be made to the Altoona Area Public Library, 1600 Fifth Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602 or to the American Cancer Society, Blair County Unit, 1004 North Juniata Street, Hollidaysburg, PA 16648 or to Shriners Hospitals for Children, care of Jaffa Shrine, PO Box 1984, Altoona, PA 16603-1984.
