Mildred E. (Shay) Meckley Smith, 92, Duncansville, formerly of Juniata, died peacefully at home Tuesday morning October 3, 2017.

She was born December 2, 1924 in Phillipsburg, daughter of the late Harry and Dorothy (Stockport) Shay. Her stepfather was W.H. Grove. Mildred was twice married, first to Lawrence W. Meckley in July 1945 and then to Paul M. Smith in May 1968. They both preceded her in death.

Surviving are her beloved son, Larry Meckley (Kathy) of Hollidaysburg; a grandson, Eric Meckley (Indrani); two great-grandchildren: Wade and Maya of San Francisco, Calif.; a stepson, Terry Smith (Rose); a sister, Eileen Alianiello; and many nieces and nephews.

Mildred was preceded in death by two sisters: Virginia Brunner and Margaret (Stacey) Melley.

Known affectionately as “Midge,” she graduated from Altoona High School in 1943. After graduation, she went to Detroit, lived with her aunt and worked at the Briggs Aircraft plant during the war years. She then moved back to Altoona and worked at W. T. Grant Co., the employment office and Puritan Sportswear. After that, Midge volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul and the Salvation Army. Her love of cooking for others led her to employment as a cook for the priests at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Altoona.

Midge was a member of the Juniata United Methodist Church.

She was a wonderful mom, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to all who knew her. She cared for others and was always willing to share her time and energy with them. She was an avid reader throughout her life and excellent artist.

Friends will be received from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, 2017, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home Inc., 501 Sixth Ave., Altoona, where a funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. with Pastor Brian Sandell officiating. Interment will be held at Blair Memorial Park Cemetery, Antis Township.

In lieu of flowers, Midge requested memorial donations be made to a charity of your choice.
