Richard E. “Dick” Shimer, 91 of Altoona died Wednesday morning January 10, 2018 at UPMC Altoona.

He was born March 7, 1926 in Altoona a son of the late Robert McKinley and Pauline Alma (Cump) Shimer. He married Lois Regina Cuttrell on July 12, 1947 in Altoona.

Surviving are his wife Lois and a nephew Kevin Shimer.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert and a nephew, Rick Shimer.

Mr. Shimer was a member of Simpson-Temple United Parish, Altoona.

He was a 1947 graduate of Altoona High School and attended Zeth Business School for two years.

Richard retired as a supervisor from the American Association of Railroads in 1988. Previously, he had been employed by the railroad as a supervisor of personnel accounting and a traveling inspector. He had been employed in his younger days as a soda jerk for the 11th Street Nut Shop.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII and Korea attaining the rank of Radioman Second Class and later worked as a recruiter in Altoona. He earned the WWII Victory medal and seven campaign stars.

Dick enjoyed playing poker, pinochle, bridge and bowling. He and Lois also enjoyed cats and showing cats.

He was a member and Past Master of Logan Lodge #490, F. & A.M. serving twice in 1981 and 1988; he was a member of the Valley of Altoona, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite bodies; Jaffa Shrine where he was a member and secretary of the Ushers; member of the Jaffa Legion of Honor; member of the Altoona Shrine Club; member of Chief Logan Forest #131, Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Square and Compass Club; Chapter and Mountain Council #9. He was also a delegate to Allegheny Synod and a District Director of AARP.

Friends will be received from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday January 15, 2018 at Myers-Somers Funeral Home, Inc., 501 Sixth Avenue, Altoona where a masonic funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m. and a funeral service will be held at 7:15 p.m. with Rev. James House officiating. Entombment will be made at Alto Reste Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society, 1837 East Pleasant Valley Boulevard, Altoona, PA 16602 or to the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown, One Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown, PA 17022.
