Sarah Cross Obituary

Sarah Lee “Sally” (Bartholomew) Cross, 75, Altoona, died at Penn Medicine, Philadelphia, after a short battle with an aggressive brain tumor. Sally was surrounded by her daughters day and night during her monthlong battle. The good Lord blessed her and took her quickly into His Kingdom of Heaven.

Sally was born in Altoona, daughter of the late Lee B. and Louise M. (Blackburn) Bartholomew. She had one sister, Susan (Bartholomew) Large of Colorado Springs, Colo.

Surviving are her former husband, Thomas W. Cross Jr.; two daughters: Amy Elizabeth Petrov and husband, Dimitar, and Rachel Lee Friedland and husband, Grant, all of Ocean City, New Jersey; five grandchildren: William and Caroline Pizzano, Grant Thomas Friedland and Sofia and Stephen Petrov, all of Ocean City, New Jersey; and two nephews: Craig and Brian Large and their families, all of Eagle, Colorado.

Sally graduated from Altoona High School in 1961 and from Altoona School of Commerce in 1963. She continued to take additional business courses upon entering into the business world in 1963 and married her high school sweetheart, Thomas W. Cross Jr., of Altoona, who is currently residing in Ocean City, New Jersey.

She had worked at the Altoona Hospital Laboratory for nine years. She entered the special educational field in 1978 as a confidential secretary for the Intermediate Unit 08, where she had completed 33 years upon retiring in 2005.

Sally was a very devoted mother and grandmother. She never missed a dance recital or birthday. Most holidays were spent with her girls. She was looking forward to making the move to Ocean City, New Jersey, this year and was planning to leave on September 20th by train to be with her girls in Ocean City, New Jersey.

Sally was a lifetime member of Altoona High School Alumni Association, a member of Silver Sneakers of The Summit Tennis and Athletic Club, Second Avenue United Methodist Church and Third Presbyterian Church of Altoona. Sally very much enjoyed knitting, baking, reading, gardening, traveling and her very special Shih Tzu dogs, Winnie and Sassy, the loves of her life.
