Sheldon C. “Bunny” Barley, 92 formerly of Hollidaysburg died Wednesday evening October 10, 2018 at Maybrook Hills Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.
He was born March 1, 1926 in Altoona a son of the late Clements Franklin and Veda Mae (Douglass) Barley.
Surviving are a brother, Russell Barley and his wife Beverly of Lancaster; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bunny was preceded in death by siblings, Pauline Crawford, Edna Moore, Dorothy Corbin, W. Roy Barley, Melvin Barley, Elwood “Buss” Barley, Charles Barley and Brud Barley.
Mr. Barley was a member of Altoona First Church of the Brethren.
Sheldon was a proud U.S. Navy veteran serving during WWII taking part in the Allied D-Day invasion of Normandy Beach and Omaha Beach and also at a later time, Okinawa, Japan. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart Medal. Sheldon served in the European, North African, Middle Eastern and South Pacific theaters of war.
He retired in 2001 as a self-employed painter after 50 years’ service and had previously been employed by S. A. Hite & Sons, Painting Contractors.
He enjoyed painting.
Friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Monday October 15, 2018 and 10-11 a.m. Tuesday October 16, 2018 at Altoona First Church of the Brethren, 510 Fifth Street, Altoona where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Bill Pepper officiating. Interment will be made at Rose Hill Cemetery, Altoona.
