Clara Helen “Cookie” Whetstine, 81, Altoona, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2020 after a brave battle with dementia. She was born March 19, 1939 in Altoona, daughter of the late William D. and Henrietta (Martin) Hoover. She married Charles W. Whetstine in Winchester, VA in May 2015.
Surviving are her husband; sons Robert Paul “Tiger” Gehret (Kat), Altoona; James Edward Gehret (Lisa Marie), Hollidaysburg; and Michael Todd Gehret (Melissa), Palmyra, PA; Six grandsons James Mathew Gehret (Kim); Travus Allen Gehret, Stephen Gehret, Brandon James Gehret, Todd Gehret, and one granddaughter Haley Gehret; and two great-grandchildren Noah James and Ava Katelyn Gehret; six siblings David Hoover (Linda), Donna Blair (Gary), Dorothy Stayer (Dick), Ed Hoover (Janice), all of Altoona, and Kevin Hoover (Nancy) of Kentucky, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
Cookie was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Bobby, William, and Merrill (Pepper), and former husband Paul Lindsay.
Cookie was a graduate of Altoona High School, Class of 1957, and Owner of Cookie’s Beauty Shop in Greenwood. She formerly worked at Sylvania.
She was an active member of Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hollidaysburg.
Cookie had the biggest heart. She was famous for the way she effortlessly crocheted blankets for her family and friends whom she loved wholeheartedly; and her baked beans, pickled eggs, and sweet tea were favorites at family get-togethers.
At Cookie’s request, there will be no public visitation or service.
