Dick Detwiler Obituary

            Dick H. Detwiler, 93, formerly of Altoona, died Sunday evening November 11, 2018 at the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home following a brief illness.

            He was born June 25, 1925 in Altoona a son of the late Albert E. and Margaret M. (Piper) Detwiler. He married Billie J. Graffious on June 18, 1948 at Bell Avenue Baptist Church, Altoona.

            Surviving are his wife, Billie; four children, son Craig Detwiler and his wife, Michelle of California; son Dale Detwiler and his wife Carrie of Hagerstown, MD; daughter Lori A. Benning and her husband, Mike of North Carolina; son Larry A. Detwiler and his wife, Kelly of Altoona; ten grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and numerous extended family members.

            Dick was preceded in death by a grandson, Josh.

            Mr. Detwiler was a life member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints, Altoona Ward.

            He was a 1943 graduate of Altoona High School.

            Dick was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during WWII attaining the rank of Aviation Machinist Mate Third Class.

            He retired as a driver from Lafferty Trucking Company following 38 years’ service, and following, was employed as a driver for Blair Senior Services for 11 ½ years.

            He, along with Billie, was a very active member at his church and he also was a proud FOP supporter.

            Dick loved visiting with friends over coffee at King’s Restaurant. He was fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and was an avid and proud fan of Altoona Area High School football team attending most games over the years as he was able. He also took great pride in the high school band. He enjoyed attending airshows, and he especially enjoyed vintage World War II aircraft.

            Friends will be received from 4-7 p.m. Sunday November 18, 2018 at Myers-Somers Funeral Home, Inc., 501 Sixth Avenue, Altoona and 10-11 a.m. Monday November 19, 2018 at the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints, 778 Brush Mountain Road, Hollidaysburg with Bishop Matt Prine presiding.

            Interment will be made at Blair Memorial Park.

            In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions please be made to the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home, 500 Municipal Drive, Duncansville, PA 16635 or to the Altoona Area High School Music Parents Association Scholarship Fund, PO Box 2279, Altoona, PA 16603-2279.
