Donald Sanford “Don” Bryan, 86, of Altoona, died Wednesday, July 7, 2021, at UPMC Altoona.
He was born October 23, 1934, the son of the late Sanford Dewey and Elizabeth Kathryn (Buschle) Bryan. On July 14, 1956, he married Peggy J. Detwiler in Altoona.
Surviving are his wife, Peggy; three children: David S. “Sandy” Bryan and life partner, Mary E. Mills, of Punxsutawney, Michele M. Fox and husband, Richard, of Hollidaysburg, and Thomas M. “Tim” Bryan of Altoona; three grandchildren: Connor, Carson and Gianna Bryan; a sister, Marie Lawruk of Altoona; a brother-in-law, David Detwiler and wife, Dana; and numerous extended family members.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth “Sis” Christopher and husband, George; a brother-in-law, Adam Lawruk; and daughter-in-law, Jonna Bryan.
Mr. Bryan was a 1952 graduate of Altoona Catholic High School and a parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves and retired in 1993 from SKF after 35 years of service. He was a life member of the Bavarian Aid Society.
Don enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and shooting pool. He was also fond of playing friendly games of poker.
Don was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, and will be sorely missed by all that knew him.
Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, 2021, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home, Inc., 501 Sixth Avenue, Altoona, where a private vigil service for the deceased will be held.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 14, 2021, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona, the Rev. Lubomir Strecok celebrant.
Entombment with full military rites will be made at Calvary Cemetery.
