Donald Steele Obituary

            Donald Clair “Don” “Pap” “Big Pap” Steele, 84 of Hollidaysburg, died unexpectedly early Monday morning October 18, 2021, at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown.

            He was born August 2, 1937, in Altoona a son of the late William Melvin and Clare Myrtle (Cox) Steele. He was twice married, first to Dorothy A. “Betsy” “Dot” Grove who preceded him in death on November 7, 2001. He then married Sandra K. Albright-Hitchens on November 29, 2004, in Altoona.

            Surviving are his wife, Sandy; four children, son Kirth William Steele (Karen) of Bethlehem; daughter Kimberly Ann Koehle (Jerry) of Altoona; daughter Kathy Jo Kowalski of Carlisle; daughter Dawn Denise Stevens (Mitch) of Altoona; step-daughter Heidi Dixon (Jeffrey) of Juniata; eleven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren, with two expected in January; and a nephew Bruce Carl Steele (Christopher Oakley) of North Carolina.

            Don was preceded in death by a brother, William Melvin Steele, Jr. and his wife Kaye.

            Mr. Steele was a member of Hicks United Methodist Church, Duncansville.

            He was a 1955 graduate of Altoona High School and attended Penn State University.

            Don retired as a Quality Control Supervisor from various textile companies following over 25 years’ service. After retirement, he was employed as an over the road truck driver, then following as a tour coach driver.

            He enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. Don most especially enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

            He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America where he was the youngest Eagle Scout at the time. Don was a former member of the Free & Accepted Masons and the Jaffa Shrine Patrol/Directors Staff unit.

            A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family.
