Eugene Himes Obituary

           

           Eugene D. “Geno” Himes, 64 of Altoona died Monday afternoon April 4, 2022, at his residence surrounded by his loving family after a long, courageous battle with cancer.  Coach Geno’s saying was “It won’t always be easy, but it will be worth it.”  His 7 year battle with cancer wasn’t always easy, but the extra moments and memories with loved ones was worth it.

             He was born April 14, 1957, in Altoona a son of the late Richard Paul Slates and Dorothy Irene (Teufel) Himes. He married Wendy S. Horton on April 24, 1976, in Altoona.

         Surviving are his wife, Wendy; three children, daughter Angel D. Page (Mark), son Shane T. Himes (Vanessa), and son Brad M. Himes (Janelle Gartmann) all of Altoona; ten grandchildren, Mark Page, Jr., Samantha Page, Brody Page, Evan Himes, Lauren Himes, Raelyn Himes, Grayden Himes, Jordyn Himes, Keagan Himes, and Gavin Himes; father-in-law, Clayton Horton; sister-in-law, Diana Lechner; brother-in-law, Dan Horton; sister-in-law, Dana Lyons (Mark); brother-in law, Clayton “Stretch” Horton, II all of Altoona; and sister-in-law, Candy Himes of Altoona; and numerous extended family members.

            Geno was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Himes, and Jack E. “Chuck” Sigrist.

            Mr. Himes was a member of St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church, Altoona.

            He was a graduate of Altoona Area High School.

            Geno retired as a write-up supervisor from Union Tank Car Company.

           He enjoyed being a PIAA referee and coaching Little League Baseball most recently at East End, Federation baseball, and basketball. Geno enjoyed bowling, weightlifting, playing softball in various local leagues, and racing. He especially enjoyed his Mustang in which he was sometimes known to have a heavy foot on the gas pedal.

            He was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates and of Penn State sports. He was life member of the Bavarian Aid Society.

            Geno most especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, family, and his pets.

            Friends will be received from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday April 11, 2022, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home, Inc., 501 Sixth Avenue, Altoona.

            A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family.

            Interment will be made at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.

            In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations please be made to the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society, 1837 East Pleasant Valley Boulevard, Altoona, PA 16602.
