Gary Wayne Sumpter, 76 of Altoona died Sunday afternoon August 30, 2020 at James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center, Altoona.
He was born February 24, 1944 in Bend, Oregon a son of the late Carroll Charles and Mildred Fae (McDonald) Sumpter.
Surviving are his husband, George A. Snyder, III; siblings, Donna Greene (Ron) and Charles Sumpter; many nieces and nephews; and many loving family members.
Gary was a graduate of Paschal High School in Ft. Worth, Texas and Texas A & M University from where he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army.
He was a veteran of the Viet Nam War where he received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart Medal having served as a combat veteran with the artillery.
Earlier in his life, he served as a Sky Marshal for the United States Marshals Service.
Gary spent 40 years as an independent over-the-road truck driver where he attained 3 million miles of accident free driving. He retired from trucking in 2014 and began a journey of volunteering at the Sacred Heart Food Pantry. Gary was a faithful volunteer as a patient transporter at James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center.
He enjoyed reading and woodworking and was an awesome cook.
Family and friends will be received at a graveside service to honor Gary beginning at 11:00 a.m. Friday September 4, 2020 at Calvary Cemetery with Pastor Duane J. Coy officiating. Military honors will immediately follow.
