George C. Wagner, 91 of Altoona died Thursday afternoon December 12, 2019 at Maybrook Hills Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Altoona.
He was born November 14, 1928 in Columbia a son of the late Cleon E. Wagner and Caroline J. (O’Reilly) Wagner Andrews. He married Joyce D. Chambers on March 3, 1954 in Altoona.
Surviving are his wife, Joyce of Altoona; a son Eric K. Wagner and his wife Gale of Somerset; daughter-in-law Lee Poff of Red Lion; five grandchildren, Lauren, Drew, Karli, Joe and Lucas; and six great grandchildren, Oliver, Judah, Jesse, Marley, Thia and Miles.
George was preceded in death by two sons, Drew Scott Wagner and Kurt Allan Wagner and a grandson Jesse.
Mr. Wagner was a member of Juniata United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school for many years.
He earned a BS degree from Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio.
He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean era with the Fourth Infantry Eighth Regiment attaining the rank of Tech Sergeant.
George retired as a social studies teacher from the Altoona Area School District having taught at the former Lincoln Elementary School; the former Logan Junior High School and the Altoona Area High School.
He was a member of Hiram Lodge #616, F. & A.M.; a member of the Valley of Altoona, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite bodies; a member of Jaffa Shrine where he belonged to the Patrol / Directors Staff and served as Illustrious Potentate in 2002; he served as the Jaffa Circus Chairman for many years; the Cabiri #106; and Altoona Court #70, Royal Order of Jesters.
George enjoyed camping, traveling and reading. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A private family Celebration of Life will be held at the convenience of the family with Rev. Julia Piper and Rev. Drew Wagner co-officiating.
Friends will be received from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday December 17, 2019 at Myers-Somers Funeral Home, Inc., 501 Sixth Avenue, Altoona where a Masonic funeral service will be held at 6:00 p.m. and military honors will immediately follow.
