February 14, 1933 ~ November 26, 2020 (age 87)

Obituary

Helen Marie “Chub” Aikens, 87, of Altoona passed away Thursday morning November 26, 2020 at UPMC Altoona.

Helen was born February 14, 1933 in Altoona. Helen was never married due to the tragic death of her soon to be husband, Joseph Dougherty, and gave birth shortly after to Joseph Aikens Sr. on December 4, 1955 in Altoona.

She is survived by her son Joseph Aikens, Sr. and his longtime companion Tina Taylor; grandson Joseph Aikens, Jr. and wife Aireka Aikens along with her great grandchildren Joseph Aikens, III and Kennedy Aikens; brother Harry “Hab” Aikens (Ann) and sisters Delores Lafferty and Dorothy Clapper. As well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her parents Crea and Edna (Stoltz) Aikens, and two brothers, Joseph “Jack” Dale and Crea John Aikens.

Helen was a graduate of the Altoona Beauty School in September of 1972. She retired from the Altoona Area School District after twenty plus years of driving a school van and previously had been employed by Puritan Sportswear for fifteen years.

She gave twenty plus years of dedicated service to the Ladies Auxiliary of the Mill Run Fire Hall.

She loved animals of all types, especially her dogs, Rugar, Maggie and Skippy.

Helen was the type of person that would find a way to provide for her family and friends even before herself. She could take a dime and turn it into a dollar to make ends meet for those around her.

She loved unconditionally and would fight hard for what she believed in. She touched many lives that came across her path whether she knew them or not, she would always see the good in them. She loved crafting, working around yard, and her swimming pool. She absolutely adored her grandson and great grandchildren. Family was everything to her and her legacy, tenacity, and grit will live on within them for generations to come.

We love you gram “GiGi”! Joe, Joey, and Kennedy
