John H. “Jack” Wingard, 83, of Altoona died early Monday morning July 10, 2023, following a lengthy battle with cancer.
He was born December 4, 1939, in Flowing Spring (Frankstown Township) a son of the late Harvey Nelson and Ethel Margaret (Lingenfelter) Wingard. He married R. Ethel Smith on July 6, 1960, at Llyswen Methodist Church, Altoona.
Surviving are his wife, Ethel; two sons, John H. Wingard, Jr. (Christine) of Middletown, and Scott B. Wingard (Sharon) of Altoona; four grandchildren, Amy, Michael, Scott, Jr., and Hope; a sister, Joyce (Wingard) Helsel of Sinking Valley; and numerous extended family members.
Jack was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Louise (Wingard) Focht.
Mr. Wingard was a 1957 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
Jack retired as an over the road driver for Imler’s Poultry following 17 years’ service. He had previously been employed by Benzel’s Bretzel Bakery as a driver; by International Harvester as a mechanic; by Bell Telephone as a fleet maintenance technician and driver, and as a janitor for the Llyswen United Methodist Church for over 20 years. He had previously also been employed at Jimmy Hilling’s gas station on Union Avenue for many years.
He enjoyed riding his Honda Goldwing trike, snowmobiling, and bowling.
Jack was a member of the former Portage Lodge, F & AM, (Hollidaysburg Lodge); a member of the Valley of Altoona, Scottish Rite bodies; a member of Jaffa Shriners where he belonged to the Patrol / Directors Staff and served as its Captain from 1985-86; a member of the Jaffa Ushers; and a member of the former Jaffa Hillbillies.
At the request if the deceased there will be no viewing.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 14, 2023, at the Chapel at Alto Reste Park Cemetery with full military rites to follow.
Interment will follow at the cemetery.
