Joseph Harley Slagle, 84 of Altoona went home to be with the Lord Friday evening October 23, 2020 at UPMC Altoona.
He was born October 13, 1936 in Altoona a son of the late Joseph Willard and Bertha Virginia (Soyster) Slagle. He married Barbara Suzanne Chilcote on October 19, 1957 at Altoona First Church of the Brethren.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Deidre A. “Dee Dee” Wendl (Bill) of Plano, TX and Susan E. Auld (Tim) of Ottawa, Canada; seven grandchildren, Beth Highfil (Jeff); Katelyn Miller (Zach); Kristen Gordon (Nick); Brooke Wendl; Joshua Auld; Luke Wendl and Emma Auld; and a daughter-in-law, Jackie Slagle of Altoona.
Harley was preceded in death by his son, Jay Harley Slagle on August 3, 2014.
Mr. Slagle attended Altoona Alliance Church.
He was a 1954 graduate of Altoona High School and was also a 1956 graduate of Altoona School of Commerce.
Harley worked for Altoona Trust from 1956 to 1967 and at Reliance Savings Bank from 1967 until his retirement in 1995. He began as a teller and worked many positions throughout his career. He was a bank manager at the Plank Road and Tyrone locations He ended his career as a mortgage loan originator.
After retirement, he and his son, Jay, started a family business, Slagle Enterprises, helping people with home improvements.
During his lifetime, he served his community on many boards including Table Rock Girl Scout Council, Blair Christian Home, Rotary Club, Home Nursing Agency, Altoona Housing Authority, Amtran Bus Authority and Calvary Baptist Church.
In his later years, he enjoyed word search puzzles and following the stock market.
He will always be remembered for his smile and his love for people.
Friends will be received from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday October 28, 2020 at Myers-Somers Funeral Home, Inc., 501 Sixth Avenue, Altoona where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Tim McGarvey officiating. Interment will be made at Alto Reste Park Cemetery.
