LeRoy Kerns Obituary

            LeRoy W. “Lee” Kerns, 84 of Altoona, lost his battle with inclusion body myositis and Parkinson’s disease early Wednesday afternoon January 3, 2024, at The Presbyterian Village at Hollidaysburg.

            He was born December 19, 1939, in Altoona, a son of the late Weldon L. and Ruth A. (Creighton) Kerns. He married Judith A. Zook on June 21, 1961, in Altoona.

            Surviving are his wife, Judy; a daughter Lori L. Piper and her husband, Benjamin of Altoona; three grandchildren of whom he was very proud, Capt. Nikole Kerns, MD, USAF and her husband Capt. Patrick VanCura, DDS, USAF of Ohio, Claire Piper, and Owen Piper both of Altoona; brother Thomas Kerns and his wife, Janet of Chesapeake, VA; and numerous extended family members.

            Lee was preceded in death by a brother, John Kerns on December 21, 1998.

            Mr. Kerns was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hollidaysburg.

            He was a 1957 graduate of Altoona High School and was pleased to serve on that class’s reunion committee.

            He retired as a Sales Manager from Plant Service Company, Pittsburgh following many years of service.

            Lee became a member of Hiram Lodge #616, Free and Accepted Masons on November 19, 1965; he was member since 1966 of the Valley of Altoona, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite bodies; he was a Noble of Jaffa Shrine where he was a member and Past Captain of the Patrol/Directors Staff. He was a Past President of the Mid-Atlantic Shrine Directors Staff Association. Lee continued his service to Jaffa Shrine by being elected to serve as its Recorder for several years. He was then also elected to serve the Mid-Atlantic Shrine Recorders Association. He, for many years, served as the Colonel of Units for Jaffa Shrine’s many yearly parades. He was a member of both Altoona Court #70, Royal Order of Jesters, and Colotic Miztli #91, Order of Quetzalcoatl. He and Judy were both members of the former Jaffa Hillbillies.

            Lee served as a boy scout leader for Troop #1 at the former First United Methodist Church, Altoona and with Troop #10 at 58th Street United Methodist Church, Altoona.

            He enjoyed white water rafting, reading books about World War II, and word-search puzzles. He enjoyed building a Sunfish Sailboat in his basement but realized too late that, due to its size, he could not remove it once completed.

            Friends will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday January 8, 2024, where a Masonic funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m., and 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday January 9, 2024, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home, Inc., 501 Sixth Avenue, Altoona where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday with Pastor Paul Bottenfield officiating.

            Interment will be made at Alto Reste Park Cemetery.

            In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations please be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, Philadelphia Hospital or Erie Hospital, in care of, Jaffa Shrine, 2200 Broad Avenue, Altoona, PA 16601.
