Martha Elizabeth Fleming, 85, of Altoona, died early Sunday morning, August 28, 2022, at her residence.
She was born on July 15, 1937, in Huntingdon, a daughter of the late Brady and Bertha (Downing) Carter. On October 8, 1980, she married Walter M. Fleming in Winchester Virginia. He preceded her in death on June 29, 1983.
Surviving are two sons: Timothy A. Carter, of Altoona and Jonathan D. Wright (Sharon) of Atlanta, Georgia; ten grandchildren: Alexis, Tyson, Tate, Abby Carter, of Altoona, Jonathan, Jessica, Jared, Jeremiah, Joi, and Jasmyn, all of Atlanta; two great-grandchildren: Aleyna and Joie; and numerous extended family members and friends.
Mrs. Fleming was a member of Church of God and Christ, Altoona.
Martha was a 1955 graduate of Altoona High School and proudly went on to serve in the United States Navy as a Corpsman from 1956-1958. She then graduated from Altoona Vo-Tech School of Practical Nursing in 1985. She was employed by PA Department of Corrections at Muncy, PA and then retired with over 30 years of service from Bell Atlantic Telephone Company.
She enjoyed reading, music, composing and reciting readings. Most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren. Martha was a member of Bell Pioneers, NAACP Altoona Chapter, and National Multiple Sclerosis Society – Allegheny Division.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the convenience of the family.
