Mary M. Mitchell, 94, of Altoona died Saturday morning May 6, 2023, at her residence surrounded by her loving family.
She was born July 14, 1928, in McKeesport a daughter of the late Edward Michael and Kathryn (Kane) Ashton. She married William Richard Mitchell on October 27, 1950, in Petersburg. He preceded her in death December 24, 2014.
Surviving are three children, daughter M. Charlene Hand (Robert) of Hollidaysburg, son William E. “Bill” Mitchell of Altoona, and son John M. Mitchell of Sinking Valley; five grandchildren, Michael Hand (Mary), Kristen Gill (Clay), Kari Conway (Ryan), Katie Mitchell, and Dana Mitchell (Audra); five great grandchildren, David, Justin, Isabella, Sam, and Elizabeth; a sister, Lucy Breslin (Tom) of New York; a special friend, Marti Winn; and Roscoe, her Pomeranian.
Mary was preceded in death by six siblings: John Ashton, Sarah Bortak, Catherine Scott, Edward Ashton, Betty Boonie, and Joan Gump.
Mrs. Mitchell was a member of Jaggard-First United Methodist Church, Altoona.
She enjoyed collecting angels and toothpick holders. Mary also enjoyed baking, cooking, dancing, and crafts.
Due to her initials, Mary referred to herself as “the M&M girl.”
Friends will be received from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm Wednesday May 10, 2023, and 10-11 am Thursday May 11, 2023, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home, Inc., 501 Sixth Avenue, Altoona where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Thursday with Rev. Fred Hickok officiating.
Interment will be made at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Petersburg.
