Melvin L. "Mel" Grassmyer

            Melvin L. “Mel” Grassmyer, 76 of Altoona passed away Thursday morning January 6, 2022, following a lengthy battle with cancer.

            He was born November 23, 1945, in Altoona a son of the late Francis and Lottie (Halland) Grassmyer. He married Donna Dodson on July 21, 1983.

            Surviving are his wife, Donna; three daughters Prentiss Grassmyer; Susan Harding and her husband, Troy; and Cindy Haggart; two granddaughters, Alexa, and Addison Harding; and a brother, Robert Grassmyer.

            Mel was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis and Edgar Grassmyer, and a sister, Louise Gottshall.

            He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving from 1963 to 1966.

            Mel retired from Norfolk-Southern Railroad following 30 years’ service.

            He loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed traveling, technology, tinkering, and was an avid Sudoku player.

            Friends will be received from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday January 11, 2022, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home, Inc., 501 Sixth Avenue, Altoona where a funeral service will be held at 5:00 p.m. with military honors to follow. Interment will be made at Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
