Nancy Eileen Shaner

            Nancy Eileen “Nanny” Shaner, 85, formerly of Altoona, died late Wednesday evening October 11, 2023, at Gainesville Health & Rehab Center, Gainesville, VA.

            She was born January 31, 1938, in Altoona, the daughter of the late Edward J. and Hazel O. (Wombacher) Mitchell. She married Paul S. “Pal” Shaner in 1956 in Altoona. He preceded her in death on January 22, 1992.

            Surviving are her son, Michael W. Shaner (Kelly) of Remington, VA; two grandchildren, grandson, Aaron M. Shaner (Brittany) of Chesapeake, VA and grandson, Brandt C. “Cody” Shaner (Paola) of Spotsylvania, VA; three great grandchildren, great granddaughter Alaina V. Shaner and great grandson Mikah P. Shaner of Spotsylvania, VA, and great granddaughter, Aariona C. Shaner of Chesapeake, VA; two brothers-in-law, John A. “Jack” Shaner and David B. Shaner of Altoona; and her former daughter-in-law, Melanie K. Shaner of Montross, VA.

            Nancy was preceded in death by two daughters, Tana Marie Shaner, and Francis Joleen Shaner; a son, Kevin Paul Shaner; and a sister, Shirley Joleen (Mitchell) Orndoff in 1974.

            Mrs. Shaner was a member of Faith Baptist Church, Altoona.

            She was employed as a Certified Nurse Assistant and private duty caregiver for many years. She had also been an Avon representative for many years.

            She enjoyed trout fishing, and trips to the casinos, but she especially enjoyed spending time with her son, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She also loved and greatly enjoyed caring for her numerous adopted cats.

            Nancy was an avid Bunko player with several neighborhood ladies.

            Friends will be received from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday October 21, 2023, at Myers-Somers Funeral Home, Inc., 501 Sixth Avenue, Altoona where a memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. (noon) with Pastor Gary G. Dull officiating.

            Inurnment will be made at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made in her name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to Shriners Hospitals for Children, PO Box 947765, Atlanta, GA 30394.
