William Lane Obituary

Surrounded by his three children, William “Bill” Lane 81, of Altoona passed gently into his savior’s arms on January 4, 2024.

Bill was born July 11, 1942, in Altoona, PA to Bob and Polly Lane. The youngest of five. he grew up with his brothers, Bob, Dick, Don and sister Polly (Chambers).  The family lived in Sinking Valley, a beautiful, rural area outside of Altoona, PA.

Bill met the love of his life Scarlett Fagan in the early years of high school. He married his sweetheart and they went on to have Jeffrey (deceased), Wendy, Todd and Amy.

Bill was all about his family and home life so after his US Marine Corps experience in the Cuban missile crisis, he opted out of a military career and began training as a machinist.  He worked diligently to learn his trade at Sylvania in Altoona.

Bill was creative and followed in his father’s footsteps to learn woodworking, first as a hobby, then as a master.

To honor his creative side and love for family, he built things like a beautiful backyard oasis, ice-skating rinks, and a wiffleball Mecca, which he generously shared with neighbors and friends.

As time went by, he watched each of his daughters marry; Wendy to Al DiNicola (of Altoona) and Amy to Mark Wilson (of Altoona).

He loved his four grandchildren, Margot, Max, Allie, and Nicolas and then was blessed with 2 great grands, Vera Lee and Vivian rose Valdez.

Bill struggled with routine factory work in his later years and decided to retire. It was only then that he found his true vocation. He was talked into driving a school van within a month of his retirement. He enjoyed the driving so much he never looked back and never missed a single day. Many families will remember Mr. Bill as the kindest driver there ever was and the only driver to craft handmade wooden toys for every child.

Bill tried to give each child a positive start every morning on his van.

Although he lost his beloved wife at 69 and his eldest son earlier, he found a way to remain positive, always have a smile and a joke, ready.

                Bill was happiest…

helping others, inviting you for a swim in his beautiful pool, sharing his tomatoes, or delivering you corn. He delighted in fixing anything that broke down for you, he was happy to let others shine in a big group. He loved his large barbecue/ swim parties, his van, his church, working in the yard and his fantastic woodshop, he loved his neighbors, his van kids, and most of all his family.

Until we meet again, rest in peace, beloved husband, father and friend.

A “Celebration of Life” ceremony is being planned for Bill in the Spring 2024.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations in memory of Bill please be made to Mending Hearts Animal Rescue, PO Box 97, Hollidaysburg, PA 16648 or mhanimalrescue.org.
