Gordon Lowell Mathers passed away on Saturday September 3, 2016 surrounded by his family. He was the son of Cecil and Edna (Kitchen) Mathers of Altoona and was born on May 5, 1941. He was married to Rebecca (Campbell) Mathers on March 17, 1973 and together they were blessed with two children, Andrew (Cynthia) Mathers of Altoona and Elizabeth (Devin) Mahoney of Herndon, VA. Five grandchildren were the joys of his life, they are: Christian, Evan and Aiden Mathers and Duncan and Shaela Mahoney. He is survived by his sister, Karen (Worley) Grieco and is also survived by in-laws Sister Roberta Campbell, OSB; Elizabeth Mokulis and Daniel Campbell.

After receiving with a Graduate Degree in Social Work (MSW) from the State University of NY at Buffalo, in 1970, Gordon spent his entire professional career providing for the human service needs of Central Pennsylvania, primarily in Blair County. Gordon was the Director of the Outpatient Department of the Altoona Hospital Behavioral Health Center for over 25 years. He was an Adjunct Instructor at PSU Altoona Campus where he taught in the field of Human Development and Family Studies for over 30 years. Gordon finalized his career as a Licensed Clinical Therapist at the Altoona Hospital and then the James E. Van Zandt Medical Center providing clinical services to veterans. Gordon was a respected and influential member of the Blair County Human Services field. Gordon retired in 2011.

Gordon loved the great outdoors and had many stories of fishing in Canada and Maine. He passed on his love of fishing, camping and sailing to his family and friends. A good day for Gordon was sailing on Lake Glendale. Gordon was known for his great sense of humor and love of puns. Gordon will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

                A viewing will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday September 9, 2016 at Myers-Somers Funeral Home, 501 Sixth Avenue, Altoona.
